NRG XTRA

It is not unusual for people in At Risk Communities to have only one meal a day. This meal will be made up of whatever is available or whatever can be scrounged. It is not uncommon to see old and young ransack garbage bins to find some kind of food that has been thrown away. Their priority is survival and to stave off hunger. Nutrition is not high on the list.

NRG Xtra is a fortified product, designed and developed by Feed a Million Mouths International from scratch. Our product, a corn and soy-based porridge, is a well-balanced, delicious, pre-cooked meal. All you need to do is add water and enjoy its nourishing goodness.

The main ingredients of NRG Xtra are soy and maize that provide high levels of protein and fibre. NRG Xtra is the immune-boosting supplement of choice because it is a protein and fibre rich whole food. It is used as a breakfast cereal or as a meal replacement.  A meal of NRG Xtra provides 100% of the RDA (recommended daily allowance) of vitamins

and minerals for a person over 6 months old, to grow into good health. It provides increased and sustained energy levels. One kilogram of NRG EXTRA provides the nutrition required by one person, for 10 days.

NRG Xtra and the Glycaemic Index

The glycaemic index (GI) is a rating system for foods containing carbohydrates. It shows how quickly each food affects blood sugar levels (glucose) when that food is eaten on its own. Foods are classified as low, medium, or high glycaemic foods.  Foods high in refined carbs and sugar are digested more quickly and often have a high GI, while foods high in protein, fat, or fibre typically have a low GI.

Why is the GI important to At Risk Communities? The most common food for our target communities is called Posho. This is a white maize-based porridge. It is high on the GI. This means that it produces a spike of energy soon after being eaten.

Often Posho is the only meal that most children will eat all day. The result is that they are unable to concentrate at school, for a sustained period. After 10:00am, it is not uncommon to see children asleep at their desks. So, they may be attending school, but the window of learning is desperately limited. NRG Xtra has been deliberately designed to be low on the GI. This means that nourishment and energy is released slowly,

to sustain performance levels over an extended period. School children remain alert for longer. This has a dramatic effect on their attention span and on their grades.
